Looks like Santa might have skipped my house this year because I didn’t see anybody? Or maybe he did come to Nigeria but the security in my estate was too tight for him to sneak in. I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt that he probably tried his best.
Or maybe he’s just rac-
Isn’t it wild how the preparation and excitement for Christmas start as early as December 1st—some even begin in the last week of November—only for it to peak on the 25th? Just like that, Christmas is over. All that excitement just for one day doesn’t sit right with me. In my opinion, Christmas should last the entire month of December. Jesus’ “alleged” birth date deserves more than a 24-hour celebration, but hey, that’s just me.
To say this is one of the best Christmas I’ve had in a long time would be… actually true. I genuinely enjoyed my Christmas—a lot! And that’s saying something because I usually don’t. (I know I’ve said that before but I just wanted to remind y’all again)
My sister and I had made plans way back in October about how we wanted to celebrate Christmas this year, and we actually stuck to them. The plan was to cook a lot and snuggle up in bed to watch as many Christmas movies as possible. And we did just that. (Which also says a lot because we usually make plans every year but don’t stick to them)
Anyway, here’s how my 2024 Christmas celebration went:
On the 24th, we stayed up until 2 am. We spent the entire day downstairs, dedicating that day to making chinchin and zobo. Instead of frying the chinchin like we usually do, we opted to bake it in the oven—because, honestly, have you seen the price of power oil lately? The baked chinchin turned out well, though it was a bit drier than the fried version. Still loved it, though. (I may or may not bake my chinchin next time💀)
By midnight, the sounds of bangers filled the air. Truth be told, I almost lost it with some of them. I get it, it’s Christmas, but is it really necessary to give me a mini heart attack with every explosion? (Explosion is such a dramatic word please lmao)
On the 25th, we started cooking around 9 am, delayed slightly by a mini water crisis in the estate. At first, I thought someone was playing a trick on us and had turned off the water because what do you mean there’s no water on Christmas morning? But apparently, a pipe had burst in the estate, cutting off the water supply. Thankfully, it was fixed quickly, and we got back to business. Takes a deep breath! May the devil not win in our lives.
We made coleslaw first, and let me just say, it was the best coleslaw I’ve had in years. And I mean that, considering I’m not even a big fan of coleslaw. There’s always so many “serenren” going on in it but Seun outdid herself on this one.
I had planned to make rainbow basmati rice, party jollof rice, banana bread, and a variety of Christmas cookies. But my body had other ideas. By the time I finished with the rainbow rice and peppered chicken/beef, my legs were screaming for me to sit.
Writing this and, I still can’t feel my legs—lmao.
So, yeah, we cooked a lot and ate to our satisfaction. By the time we were ready to eat, which was around 2 pm, we could barely manage a few portions. Lesson learned: if you keep snacking on everything while cooking, you’ll be too full to enjoy the actual meal.
I’m still going to make my party jollof, though—✋🏾. Ever since I discovered the hack to making the perfect Nigerian party jollof rice, my rice and tomatoes have known no peace—and rightfully so!
We wrapped up the day with Netflix, watching Bad Boys (starring Will Smith/Martin Lawrence,) and Devara, an Indian movie. Both were insanely good.
By the time I got into bed, my eyes shut down on its own.
The highlight of my day? Mo Salah’s consistency with his Christmas post. He does it every year, without fail—and I love it lmao
How did your Christmas celebration go?
Christmas was goodddddd
😂🥂
